October Rec - Out of Memory and Time

Author: [livejournal.com profile] elrhiarhodan
Characters/Pairings: Neal Caffrey, Peter Burke, Elizabeth Burke, Mozzie, Mention of Kate
Rating: R
Word Count: 600
Theme: October - Spooky Fics
Original Publication Date: August 25, 2011
Content Notes: Death Fic - Non-canonical death of a canon character.
Summary: The spirit, cut from the body in a moment of startled agony, lingers. Neal tries to bring solace to those he left behind, and to make sense of what happened.
Why should people re-read this story?: I was trying to write a lyrical death story and I think I succeeded, and even though the story was written in August (and if I recall correctly, a very hot and unpleasant August), there is something autumnal about it - it feels like winter is just around the corner. The fic is based on the imagery of Wim Wender's classic Wings of Desire.

I remember reading that one and of course I have a POV on this piece of work ( I have a POV on everything you've written my dear). Lol.
Anyway, I love Wings of Desire so naturally I was a great fan of this one. It's probably the melancholy and the poetry side of it that I like so much.
The writing is also highly evocative and you can visualize everything, almost like a scene in a feature film.
I think it's Neal's longing for love in a way, love that he did find while he was alive with Peter, El and Moz. He continues to look after his beloved ones. I remember the part about Kate, though. I found interesting that he couldn't reach for Kate in the afterlife, exactly like what happened between the two of them in real life. I took it as Neal and Kate were not meant to be. I alwys wondered what inspired you to write this one? Was it the film itself? Or something that happened to you that particular day? We, writers sometimes start a piece of fic for so many reasons...
It's a beautiful piece of work, anyhow, one of my favs in this genre, thus my comment today.
Hope you are well.
